Why does the sliding window in a listwise reranker star...

The choice is structural rather than empirical. Sliding head-first commits the top ranks early, which prevents documents from the tail from rising to the top. Sliding tail-first allows documents to ‘bubble up’ through successive windows, ensuring that a document at rank 100 has a path to reach rank 1. This is a structural necessity for effective listwise reranking.
